Description: Here is the lower end of one of the huge digesters in the pulp mill of Fraser Companies Limited, in Edmundston, N. B. Like a huge pressure cooker, the digester soars to some 60 feet in height and 16 feet in diameter. In it are poured some 35 cords of wood chips at the top. A cooking acid is pumped in at the bottom, steam is introduced and the wood chips are cooked at an elevated temperature and high pressure for eight hours. The cooking process separates the cellulose fibres in the wood from ligneous and other components. This way, chemical pulp is made.
