Teaching preparation

Proposed task:
After completing the previous three Learning Units on forestry topics the teacher concludes with this Unit on the changes in the method of transport of timber in the last one hundred years.

Technical skills and education to citizenship :
Working in groups, students will set-up a photos exposition to illustrate changes in the method of transport of timber throughout the years.

Proposed approach:
Set-up: In teams, students discuss how they think wood was transported at the beginning of the century.

- Each group present to the class what they thought were the methods used to transport wood at the beginning of the century.

- Verifying learning by reading documents on the methods of transporting wood from the Internet site www.toucherdubois.ca :

Objectivation:
- How do you think wood was transported from the forest to the mills in the past?
- Do you think transport trucks existed at the beginning of the century when wood was first hauled to the mills?

Proposed approach:

- Student view the collection of pictures pertaining to the stream wood drive season found on the site: www.toucherdubois.ca

- In teams, students select pictures from the site to organize a photo display to illustrate changes that occurred in methods of transport of timber during the 20th century.

- Presentation of the photo display - Oral and visual presentation

- Invite a resource person to explain changes in the methods of wood transport from the forest to the mills during the 20th century.

Diversity: Compare the methods of transport of the primary resource to the manufactures and how the transport was done in the past .

- Set-up an exchange by Webcam of students of different regions and inquire about the means of transport of their primary resource of their area.

Objectivation:
- How is timber transported today from the forest to the mills?
- How do they determine what species of wood and in what form it is to be transported in each different mill?
- In the past, how did the lumbermen decide what type of wood was to be sent on river streams to mills?

How was your primary resource transported to the factory in the past?
- How is it transported today?
- Comment on the different methods of transport used in the past and in the present?
- Is there a significant change in the means of transport then and now? and here and there?
