The Importance of Water Flow

Description : The log Drive started as soon as the water level in streams was high and it would last usually fifteen days. Worker called that the "Grande Drive". During those two weeks, wood was thrown in the streams and carried down by the current. Drivers had to guide logs to prevent pile-ups or release log jams. All wood cut in winter had to be transported this way before the streams' water level fell. In this picture taken in the Green River area, we can see what happened when the water level went down. Men were using pulpwood hooks to pile logs near the stream. This work was very demanding.
